Sydney Park in the inner city suburb of St Peter's is one of Sydney's largest park with over 40 hectares of rolling parklands. Once upon a time, the area was a clay extraction and waste disposal site but over time, it has been transformed into a beautiful park which has become very popular for leisure and play. Sydney Park offers a diverse range of passive & active recreation for the whole community such as:
. Alan Davidson Oval located in the north-eastern corner of the park provides facilities for cricket and Australian Rules football.
. The Pavilion has a number of community venue rooms available for hire with public toilet and change rooms facilities.
. The CARES (Community and Road Education Scheme) facility has a miniature network of roads complete with traffic signals for families and children to learn bicycle riding skills in a safe environment. The CARES facility function rooms are also available for hire to the community.
. A large children’s playground with a diverse range of traditional & creative play equipment for children of all ages including slides, swings, climbing apparatus and sand pits. The wide rubber-surfaced paths between the play elements are wheelchair-accessible and feature musical elements. The playground can be easily accessed from the car park located off Barwon Park Road.
. A series of wetlands and water courses run from the centre to the southeastern corner of the park providing a habitat for native and visiting waterfowl. Elevated wooden-decked viewing platforms are provided around many of the wetlands for bird watching, sunbathing or picnics.
. The brick kilns precinct in the north-western corner of the park have remnants of the site’s previous use as a municipal brick works. After the brickworks were closed, the clay pits were filled with municipal waste from 1948 to 1976. When the tip was later closed, a layer of soil and building rubble was placed over the site to create the regional park as it is today.
